Job Description

Purpose of the Post


The post holder will be responsible for managing all aspects of running the home, for medium to long-term planned placements, to ensure young people are supported and prepared to move on to independent living. They will ensure that high levels of emotional and physical care, appropriate activities, comfortable accommodation, and the service of keyworkers are planned, provided, and applied in accordance with the home’s procedures and strategies.


This post is linked to the Statement of Purpose relating to the provision of a medium to long-term placement home. The post holder will be the Registered Manager for the home as specified in the Children’s Homes Regulations 2001 and must fulfil the obligations set out in the National Minimum Standards for Children’s Homes 2002. The home will provide medium to long-term placements for young people where this is assessed as the most suitable intervention. Emotional sustainability, strong partnership practice, excellent communication skills, the ability to form lasting relationships, and a tenacious, planned approach to achieving positive outcomes for young people are all essential.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities

To be responsible for the management, co-ordination and development of a range of quality services for young people referred to and/or accommodated within the home.

  • Promote partnership working with young people, their families, staff, and other agencies, in order to meet individual needs.

  • Provide effective leadership by implementing organisational strategies and objectives.

  • Promote team development and effective team working.

  • Maximise staff effectiveness through motivation, development, and clear personnel policies.

  • Take the lead in setting standards, evaluating achievements, and driving continuous improvement.

  • Contribute to the development of company policies and service initiatives aimed at improving service delivery.

  • Ensure that the Statement of Purpose is accurate, reflects the needs of young people, and outlines staff qualifications and expertise.

  • Set and review targets and objectives for the home’s staff team to ensure clear direction and focused work.

  • Provide operational management of staff and deploy resources effectively, including participation in an on-call rota.

  • Manage staff performance through induction, supervision, and appraisal.

  • Maintain clear communication strategies to ensure information flows effectively within the team.

  • Lead the allocation of services provided to young people to meet assessed needs.

  • Ensure continuity of care for young people where appropriate, including those who are non-resident or transitioning.

  • Take responsibility for the effective management and development of direct services to young people.

  • Actively participate in recruitment, grievance, disciplinary, health and safety, and other staffing matters with support from the Director.

  • Identify and address staff training and development needs.

  • Ensure compliance with Health and Safety regulations and maintain the home to an acceptable standard of repair.

  • Oversee effective budget management and administration.

  • Promote and implement the company’s Equality and Diversity policies.

  • Ensure staff understand and implement safeguarding and child protection procedures.

  • Undertake any additional duties as required by the Director, commensurate with the role.

  • Supervision and Appraisal: Ensure staff receive appropriate supervision and appraisal in line with company policy.

  • Equality and Diversity: Uphold equality and diversity policies to eliminate discrimination and promote fairness.

  • Confidentiality: Maintain strict confidentiality regarding all personal and professional information.

  • Induction: Ensure new staff complete a thorough induction programme aligned with industry standards.
